Look for the helpers. - Fred Rogers

ree

It's November, so I'm all about gratitude and holidays and food (don't those go together great?) So on Wednesday, someone on Facebook asked if any of her friends were involved with "the cheese ball sorority."

That would be Psi Iota Xi sorority. I didn't know much, although I'd bought a few cheese balls and eaten parts of several more.

By yesterday I had learned that they make a lot of cheese balls. A lot. I don't have exact numbers. I don't have a list of the people they help. Rather than say the wrong thing, I will just say that that lot of cheese balls translates into a lot of money. That they give away to a lot of different places.

They work hard to give.

Things have been rough lately for people. Going into winter makes it even worse. A lot of Little Free Libraries are multi-tasking these days and being Little Free Pantries as well. A sheet of places offering help and meals is all over Facebook. Not just here, but all over.

Like in Mexico. The following is a letter from Richard Phillips.

This is John Kelderhouse and Clara Miller and Clara’s Cupboard.

Clara Miller is with the Miami County Street Outreach. They have just recently received their 501 status and are serving the needs of the homeless.

Clara’s Cupboard is being stocked to feed the homeless and poor and already is being used by those in need.

Items like nonperishable foods, plus apples , oranges, potatoes bacon and eggs and milk can currently be donated. In addition, personal hygiene items including soap, toiletries etc. may also be included.

She can use your help to fully stock it.

Thank you, in advance, for all of your help and prayers for the poor and needy!

If you have any questions, please feel free to call her at any time. (Clara's number is 317-617-0172 - Liz)

These are only a few of the helpers. There are others--you know who I mean.

There are, of course, the takers. The down side of generosity. They are the ones who will take advantage. Instead of taking what they need, they'll take it all. Instead of visiting one pantry, they'll visit them all, one by one, literally taking food from other needy people's mouths. They will accept holiday help from not one church but several.

They are why, as the saying goes "we can't have nice things." Except that we still do, because of the helpers. The givers. The ones with servants' hearts. You know who I mean.

Have a good week. Be a helper. Be nice to somebody.
