Thanksgiving is barely in our rearview mirror. In fact, some of us may still be full from our turkey dinner. But, let’s face it, the stores have been pushing Christmas since shortly after the 4th of July. Okay, that might be a slight exaggeration, but...

What makes your house Christmassy? Is it the smell of cookies baking wafting from the kitchen and swirling about the fragrance of pine needles in the living room? Is it the sight of that snowman that your daughter made from a lightbulb dangling on the tree? Maybe it’s miles and miles of gift wrap, yards and yards of ribbon, and gift tags out the wazoo. Or the lights that your husband hung, reflected in the kitchen windows as you eat a festive meal. The sound of carolers from the lawn or choirs at church. It’s such a wonderful season!

Whatever it is that stirs your Christmas spirit, I hope you remember in this busy time, to take a breath, and reflect on the beauty of the season. On the opportunities that abound for people to be generous, to think about others for a change, offer a smile and a “Happy Holidays!” to a stranger. Make sure you slow down enough to enjoy family. And don’t forget to take some moments for yourself. Merry Christmas, a little early!

M.J. Schiller is a retired lunch lady/romance-romantic suspense writer. She enjoys writing novels whose characters include rock stars, desert princes, teachers, futuristic Knights, construction workers, cops, and a wide variety of others. In her mind everybody has a romance. She is the mother of a twenty-eight-year-old and three twenty-six-year-olds. That's right, triplets! So having recently taught four children to drive, she likes to escape from life on occasion by pretending to be a rock star at karaoke. However…you won’t be seeing her name on any record labels soon.
