I Love These Days

No, I don't always love them, by any means, but so many people miss "the old days." In their memories, they recall lightning bug nights, not living without air conditioning. They remember their mother cooking perfect, wonderful, healthy meals three times a day, not the sweat on her forehead or that she never stopped moving. They know she slept because she always got up when they needed her and she was always awake if they missed curfew, but when did she have time?

There are things about the old days I miss, but also, a lot I don't.

It's already 8:00 AM on Saturday morning. Usually I have the post up by now and am rushing back in to fix the typos that slip past me Every Single Week. I should be sharing the link to the blog and sometimes posting it to Substack and then asking everyone I know on social media to come and say hello.

Sometimes I'm digging up a previously-published one because I like it or because I'm running too far behind to write a new one. That's what I should do today, but instead I'm just going to talk.

About why I love these days.

"Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages...welcome to Peru, Indiana, the Circus Capital of the World, and Miami County's own permanent big top!" - Michelle Enyeart Boswell

It's Circus Week in Peru, the time of excitement and volunteerism and kids doing great things. It's time for corn dogs, lemon shakeups, and whatever else can be found in the booths that line Broadway. It's a time hardly anyone says there's nothing to do here or gee, another Dollar Store.

I just finished a book, Shades of Green. It took me forever to write it and I'm not sure when it will be out--I hope the publisher is more timely than the author--but as I look out the Window this morning, I'm grateful for the shades of green I can see from here.

Jim Grey recommended last week's Window on his blog, Down the Road. I don't mind admitting it made my day.

Two of my grandkids had birthdays this week. Isn't it amazing how many calendar days you can fill up with special events and memories? One of the things that makes being old worth it.

There are bluebirds on the clothesline. I went to Squirrel Creek. I got to hold a baby who has the sweetest dimple in her cheek. I laughed a lot. No explanation needed.

Some ... many things have not changed since last week. Many things still disturb, upset, and worry me. But the ditch lilies are still blooming, the tall stalks in the cornfields are murmuring in the wind, and today's the Ice Cream Social at Ebenezer Church. 5:00 - 8:00 PM.

May all your days be circus days this week. Be well. Be nice to somebody.
